Career Basics

After moving to Los Angeles to pursue other interests Mathew King returned to the practice of law in 1992. After working for several firms over the next 15 years or so his firm was merged with Mullen & Filippi to provide their first Southern California presence south of Bakersfield. The new office was only four attorneys at the time and has expanded to more than a dozen attorneys . Matthew was promoted to the managing partner position after becoming an associate partner in 2011.

Education

Matthew is an alumnus of The College of the Holy Cross which is a small Jesuit liberal arts college. His major was in Political Science. After taking a year off to ski in Colorado he returned to Boston to complete his law degree. Matthew’s first legal experience was as a student prosecutor where he ultimately was hired in his first job as an attorney in the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office in Plymouth, Massachusetts. After learning to try cases and taking about 200 to jury verdict he switched sides focusing primarily on criminal defense.

Professional Membership

Matthew joined the California State Bar Association upon becoming licensed to practice in California and has been a member since. He became a Certified Specialist in workers’ compensation approximately in 1999.

Personal Note

I believe I have the respect of all the judges and opponents I continue to interact with on a daily basis as I approach everyone with respect and dignity despite what may be professional differences. I believe one can be a zealous opponent and advocate for a position and then have a beer with your opponent afterwards regardless of who prevailed.
For relaxation I try to golf as much as I can, although nowhere as often as I’d like. I used to shoot in the 80’s consistently, but that may be more difficult these days. I’ve broken 80 twice and I have a double eagle in my career which may surprise you to know is more rare than an ace which I’ve come close to more than a few times but haven’t been able to score. I try to bike most weekends to maintain physical fitness.
