Career Basics
Ohnmar Shin became a Senior Partner with Mullen & Filippi in 2012 and in their Sacramento office. After leaving the Public Defender’s office, she began her career practicing in the area of workers’ compensation law when she was hired by Mullen & Filippi in 2001. Ohnmar became a certified specialist in the area of workers’ compensation in 2011. In representing clients through all aspects of the workers’ compensation system, Ohnmar has successfully argued in front of the California Court of Appeal, 3rd Appellate District wherein the court agreed that disdainful reactions of co-workers to an employee’s abusive conduct were neither “actual events of employment” nor the “predominant cause” of her psychological injuries within the meaning of the statute. The court ruled that since the predominant cause of her injury was not an actual event of employment, but rather her own conduct, her injury was not compensable Verga v. WCAB, 159 Cal. App. 4th 174 (2008).
Education
Ohnmar received her law degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles in 1997 where she was a recipient of a Public Interest Law grant and served as President of the Asian American Law Students Association. Before graduating, she had internships with the City Attorney’s Office, Federal Public Defender’s office, JAG (Judge Advocate general’s Corp) and Legal Services. She received her B.A. in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Riverside, where she competed on the karate team.
Professional Membership
Ohnmar is a member of the State Bar of California and Sacramento County Bar Association. She served as President of the Sacramento County Bar Association, Workers’ Compensation Section and in various positions on the board for VICA (Valley Industrial Claims Association). Ohnmar is a certified specialist in worker’s compensation.
Personal Note
In my career, I’ve discovered that being passionate about what you do with integrity and humility will bring you success in any of your endeavors.
I believe it is important to live your life with passion and to find things you are passionate about. Outside of law, I have the privilege of being a mother to 2 wonderful children and wife to an amazing husband. We are a running family! My kids run track and cross country. They inspired me to find my passion and drive, wherein I ran the Boston Marathon and my first 100 mile race in 2015. When I am not working or busy with kid activities, you can find me running on the dirt trails in Auburn and training for my next ultramarathon….hopefully one day the Western States 100! Be passionate, its contagious!
